Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Which Is Better for Irish Businesses?
Google Ads captures existing demand. Meta Ads creates it. A practical guide for Irish businesses on lead quality, budgets and when to use both platforms.
By MJC Media Agency

Ask ten Irish business owners whether they should advertise on Google or on Facebook and Instagram, and you will hear ten different answers. One had a great run with Google Ads. Another swears Meta brought in more enquiries than anything else. A third tried both and decided paid advertising doesn't work.
The honest answer is that neither platform is better in general. They do different jobs. Google Ads is built to capture demand that already exists. Meta Ads is built to create and shape demand. Once you understand that difference, the decision becomes much clearer.
What Is Google Ads?
Google Ads lets your business appear when someone searches for what you offer. The most common format for service businesses is search advertising: text ads shown at the top of Google's results for the searches you choose.
The key idea is search intent. Someone typing "emergency plumber Dublin" or "teeth whitening near me" has already decided they need something. They are actively looking for a provider. Your ad is answering a question they have just asked.
- Existing demand: you are reaching people who are already looking, rather than persuading people who weren't.
- Keyword targeting: you choose the searches your ads appear for, and exclude the ones that waste money.
- Local service searches: location targeting lets a clinic in Cork or a roofer in Galway show up only to people in the area they actually serve.
- Limited by search volume: you can only reach as many people as are searching. In smaller towns or niche services, that ceiling can be low.
What Is Meta Advertising?
Meta advertising covers Facebook and Instagram. Instead of waiting for someone to search, you put your business in front of people while they scroll, based on who they are, where they live and what they are interested in.
- Creative strategy matters most: the image, video and opening line do the work a search query does on Google. Weak creative means weak results.
- Audience targeting: you can reach people by location, age, interests and behaviour, and retarget people who have already visited your website.
- Demand generation: many people seeing your ad hadn't thought about your service today. Good ads give them a reason to.
- Lead forms and landing pages: Meta can collect enquiries inside the app with an instant form, or send people to a landing page on your own website. Instant forms are easier to complete; landing pages usually give you more considered enquiries.
Google Ads
Capture Existing Demand
- People are already searching
- Higher intent, limited volume
- Keywords and location
Meta Ads
Generate and Influence Demand
- People are discovering you
- Larger reach, mixed intent
- Creative and audiences
Capturing Demand vs Creating Demand
This is the fundamental difference. Google Ads meets people at the moment of need. Meta Ads reaches people before they are actively looking, and either prompts them to act now or keeps your business in mind for when they do.
A boiler repair company is a good example of a capture-led business: nobody wants a boiler repair until theirs breaks, and then they search. An aesthetic clinic launching a new treatment is creation-led: most people don't know the treatment exists until they see it explained well.
Which Platform Generates Better Leads?
It depends on what you mean by "better". It helps to look at several factors together rather than a single number.
- Lead quality and buying intent: Google leads tend to arrive with clearer intent because the person went looking. Meta leads are more varied: some are ready now, some are curious.
- Cost per lead: Meta often produces a lower cost per lead, but a cheap lead that never answers the phone is not good value. Compare cost per customer, not just cost per lead.
- Conversion potential: a Google lead may convert quickly. A Meta lead may need more nurturing before they book.
- Sales cycles: for high-value or considered purchases, Meta is often the start of a longer conversation rather than an instant sale.
- Follow-up requirements: whichever platform you use, results depend on how quickly and consistently you contact enquiries. We cover this in detail in why Facebook leads don't always become customers.
How Much Should Irish Businesses Spend?
There is no universal figure, and anyone quoting one without knowing your business is guessing. Costs vary by industry, location, competition and season. A competitive Dublin search term can cost many times more per click than a niche term in a rural county.
A more useful way to set a budget is to work backwards:
- 01What is a new customer worth to you, over their first year and over their lifetime?
- 02How much could you afford to spend to win one customer and still be profitable?
- 03Roughly how many enquiries does it take to win one customer today?
- 04Allow enough budget to gather meaningful data, usually over at least several weeks, before judging the results.
Spreading a very small budget across both platforms often means neither gets enough data to work properly. It is usually better to start with one, prove it, then expand.
When Should Businesses Use Both Platforms?
Google and Meta work well together once the basics are in place. A common pattern is:
- Google Ads captures people actively searching for your service.
- Meta Ads builds awareness with a wider local audience, so more people recognise your name when they do search.
- Meta retargeting reminds people who visited your website but didn't enquire.
- Both feed into one CRM, so every enquiry is followed up in the same way and you can see which source produces customers.
That last point is where many businesses fall down. Running both platforms without connected tracking makes it very hard to know what is actually working. That is why we treat advertising as one part of a connected acquisition system rather than a standalone activity.
What MJC Media Recommends
Choose the platform based on how your customers behave, not on which one a friend had success with. If people search for your service when they need it, start with Google. If your service needs explaining, or people don't search for it, start with Meta. If both are true, plan for both, but introduce them in stages.
Most importantly, judge your advertising on customers and revenue, not clicks or leads. You can see the kind of reporting we focus on in our Results section, or hear from businesses we have worked with on our Client Testimonials page.
Is Google Ads or Meta Ads cheaper in Ireland?
Meta usually has a lower cost per click and often a lower cost per lead, but Google leads often have higher intent. Compare the cost of winning a customer on each platform rather than the cost of a click.
Can a small business run Google Ads and Meta Ads at the same time?
Yes, but with a small budget it is often better to start with one platform, prove it works, then add the second.
Which platform is better for local service businesses?
If customers search for your service when they need it, Google Ads is usually the starting point. If your service needs to be explained or seen, Meta is often stronger.
